Giggle Bells

Silly Christmas songs to sing

Three silly Christmas songs with new words to tunes everyone already knows, so kids can sing along on the first try. They are about dinner, dishes and the cat in the tree. The tunes are all in the public domain, and you are welcome to sing these words in a school show or a video.

Giggle Bells

To the tune of Jingle Bells. James Lord Pierpont, 1857. Public domain.

Verse 1

Sitting down to eat
with a plate of Christmas pie,
Grandpa tells a joke,
gravy starts to fly!
Baby bangs a spoon,
Doggy howls along,
What fun it is to laugh so loud
we turn it into song! Oh!

Chorus

Giggle bells, giggle bells,
giggle all the way!
Oh, what fun it is to laugh
on a snowy winter day, hey!
Giggle bells, giggle bells,
giggle all the way!
Tell a joke and pass it on
and laugh till New Year's Day!

Verse 2

Snow is in my boots
and a snowball's in my sock,
Sister laughs so hard
she can hardly talk.
Brother's in a drift,
only boots stick out,
What fun it is to slide downhill
and hear the whole street shout! Oh!

Wash the Dishes

To the tune of Deck the Halls. Welsh melody, words to it from 1862. Public domain.

Verse 1

Wash the dishes after dinner,
Fa la la la la, la la la la!
First one done is called the winner,
Fa la la la la, la la la la!
Grandma's gravy boat is sticky,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la!
Cranberries are extra tricky,
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Verse 2

Stack the plates up nice and steady,
Fa la la la la, la la la la!
Is the pie for dessert ready?
Fa la la la la, la la la la!
Dad says, "First the forks and spoons, please,"
Fa la la, la la la, la la la!
Then dessert, and no more chores, please!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

O Christmas Cat

To the tune of O Christmas Tree. German folk melody. Public domain.

Verse 1

O Christmas cat, O Christmas cat,
why are you in the branches?
O Christmas cat, O Christmas cat,
you're taking silly chances!
You knocked the star right off the top,
and then the bells went drop, drop, drop.
O Christmas cat, O Christmas cat,
please come down from the branches!

Verse 2

O Christmas cat, O Christmas cat,
you're wearing all the tinsel.
O Christmas cat, O Christmas cat,
you're napping on the presents.
You chewed the ribbon, licked the bow,
and now you're purring soft and low.
O Christmas cat, O Christmas cat,
we love you, silly kitty.

Want the real carols too? The Music Hall has words and stories.

Snowglobe Lane is a whole Christmas street you can walk down online: Advent windows to light, carols to sing, a kitchen with cookies to bake, a workshop with things to color and print, and a quiet chapel at the end of the lane.
